I will always remember my fiftieth birthday.
"Baya, you're a crone now. An old woman. Your time is done."
I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach. Fear, anger, confusion — all in the space of a few seconds. I was speechless.
There and then, I decided to find out. I was not ready to be an old woman. Years later — I'm still not ready.

The Shape of the Journey
Not three women.
Three voices in one.
That confusion sent me looking for answers. Here's what I found:
Life isn't a ladder, where we leave parts of ourselves behind as we climb — always looking up, always striving for the next rung.
Life has never felt like that to me.
Instead, it is a spiral. Again and again I encounter the same challenges, the same choices — each time different, yet somehow familiar. Each return offers another chance to choose differently, to see more clearly, or to remember something I had forgotten. A series of circles woven together, each one bringing me closer to my own centre.
That centre is where the Enchantress dwells. She does not travel around the spiral. She's the still point — sovereign of her own life, at peace because she has come home to herself.
Around her move three voices. The Maiden brings wonder and the certainty that life is full of possibility. The Mother brings devotion and the capacity to hold others. The Crone brings discernment and the wisdom to let go gracefully.
These are not three separate women. They are three voices the Enchantress hears within herself.
But when I went looking for a real Crone to learn from, I hit a wall.
Real Women, Not Invented Characters
The Crone was invented by men in the 1920s.
The archetypes are real. The witches and hags never were.
Maiden, Mother, Crone — the framework itself is old.
But when I went looking for who actually filled those roles in the old stories, I found witches. Wicked stepmothers. Hags.
So I looked closer.
The "ugly hag" turned out to be clever, witty, and dangerously sharp.
The "wicked stepmother" was beautiful and gifted — her only real crime was that no one loved her, so the storytellers made her bitter instead of powerful.
Eleanor of Aquitaine. Mary Wollstonecraft. Joan of Arc. Brigit of Kildare. Aoife of Leinster. Real women, in their full power, quietly turned into monsters by men who didn't know what else to do with them.
There are almost no visible role models for women past 45. We're told "50 is the new 30" and my new personal favorite: "70 is the new 50."
As if the answer to growing older is pretending we haven't.
I'd rather know who actually did this before me. Real heroes we can look up to and learn from. Real women from history, woven into the very fabric of The Quest for your own personal Enchantress.
That's what 27th September is for — meeting them properly.
